These locks afforded little protection against forced and surreptitious entry. Smokehouse locks, designed in England, were formed from wrought iron sheet and employed simple lever and ward mechanisms. Padlocks with spring tine mechanisms have been found in York, England, at the Jorvik Viking settlement, dated 850 AD. The use of bronze was more prevalent for the early Chinese padlocks. Padlocks were made from bronze, brass, silver, and other materials. According to Hong-Sen Yan, director of the National Science and Technology Museum, early Chinese padlocks were mainly " key-operated locks with splitting springs, and partially keyless letter combination locks". Padlocks have been used in China since the late Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 AD). Przeworsk and Chernyakhov padlocks had a sleeve attached to the case, and a long bent rod which could be inserted into the case and the sleeve.
Roman padlocks had a long bent rod attached to the case, and a shorter piece which could be inserted into the case. Padlocks have been used in Europe since the middle La Tène period, subsequently spreading to the Roman world and the Przeworsk and Chernyakhov cultures. They were known in early times by merchants traveling the ancient trade routes to Asia, including China. There are padlocks dating to the Roman Era, 500 BC – 300 AD. The prefix pad- is of unknown origin it is combined with the noun lock, from Old English loc, related to German loch, "hole". Hasp padlock plus#
Each pack comes complete with an 8.0mm HSS drill bit, plus 8 x M8 coach bolts, with large penny washers, spring washers and nuts for use on the inside of the shed. The supplied standard fixing pack comes with 80mm long coach bolts, but to cater for fixing through thicker timber structures there is also a 100mm coach bolt pack option. Overall dimensions 225mm wide (nominal) x 75mm high Securing Shed & Outhouse doors, Gates, or any other opening structure or flap where a high level of security is required.
The unit is designed to offer a universal solution, so can be used on left or right handed doors (simply by rotating the unit through 180 degrees) and can be quickly and easily fitted by any competent handyman using just standard DIY tools.
The 15mm hole through the staple is large enough to take the shackle of high security padlocks such as the Squire SS50CS and SS65CS, while the zinc phosphate pre-treatment and tough powder coat finish deliver great weather protection for a long operational life of the hasp and staple.
The 6 pre-formed holes through each of the hasp mounting plate and staple mounting plate, offers maximum flexibility for installation, allowing you to choose which are the best 4 holes to use for each side (it is not essential to use all 8 fixing bolts provided, but we would recommend using at least 2 bolts to fix the hasp mounting plate and 2 bolts to fix the Staple mounting plate) The vertical shackle is a design feature which allows closed shackle locks (such as the Squire SS50CS and SS65CS) to hang tidily, making the padlock and staple much more difficult to attack than a hasp with a horizontal staple. The 12mm thick staple makes the unit ideal for use with high security closed shackle padlocks, which makes it virtually impossible for a thief to attack either the shackle on the lock or the hasp staple, but the hasp can also be used with open shackle padlocks if preferred. The supplied M8 coach bolt fixings are through bolts to defeat crowbar or lever attack, while the fact that they are concealed when the unit is in the locked position protects the fixings themselves against direct attack. Much tougher than most of the other hasps on the market, this unit is manufactured from 5mm thick laser-cut steel plate, with the hardened staple formed from 12mm thick steel, making it a major deterrent to sawing and drilling attack.Īs you would expect with a hasp of this quality, the hinge pin is welded top and bottom to defeat pin-removal attacks. The staple is hardened and the whole unit is designed to suit higher-security closed shackle padlocks as well as being compatible with a wide range of open shackle padlocks. The PD SHHS1 heavy duty, high security hasp & staple, features fully-concealed bolt-through fixings on both sides and has achieved Sold Secure approval, CEN4 rating and Police approval (under the ACPO Secured by Design scheme).
